When he was 12 years old, Dillian along with his family moved to the UK. While living in Jamaica, Dillian Whyte didn’t receive any education at all. It was hard times as children were trying to survive situations no child at such an age should. After he had moved to the UK, Whyte was living in Brixton with his family. Whyte found his love for boxing at Miguel’s Boxing Gym.
Whyte spoke about his early influence on boxing experience when he was still in school. Now, 31 years old, Dillian Whyte is father to three children. He has regarded Jack Dempsey, Sonny Liston, Archie Moore, Lennox Lewis and James Toney as his early influences.
Amateur Years of Dillian Whyte
Dillian Whyte made his first amateur appearance in 2009 at the ripe age of 20. Whyte was declared as a winner over three rounds against Anthony Joshua by unanimous decision. Over his next six fights, he culminated five knock-out victories. One of his opponents fell in a coma for several weeks as a result of his knock-out punch.
Dillian Whyte has faced a dop test and found positive with banned stimulant Methyl-Hexaneamine after a win against Sandor Balogh the Hungarian fighter. The UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) organization under the direct supervision of an independent National Anti-Doping Panel conducted the test and found the evidence of illegal substance abuse. Therefore, Dillian Whyte was sentenced two years banned from all competitions and his banned period is from October 13, 2012, to October 12, 2014. His victory over Sandor Balogh was also discredited. Although Whyte and his promoter logged several formal appeals for the ban. But the decision remained untainted. Due to this, his win against Sandor Balogh was also revoked.
Come Back of the Year
After his two-year ban Whyte returned to the ring on November 21, 2014, at the Camden Centre, Kings Cross, London to fight with a Croatian boxer Ante Verunica. During the second round of the bout, Whyte delivered a big right hand causing Verunica to fall to the ropes. After a few fierce combinations referee Jeff Hinds was forced to stop the fight. On his first comeback bout, Whyte was awarded the victory via a technical knock-out.
With this grand comeback, Whyte showed what he had done to reform during his timeout. He continued this dominating display by stopping Tomas Mrazek and heavyweight hope Kamil Sokolowski in only three rounds into the fight.
Over the next couple of years, Dillian Whyte appeared in many undercard fights including Luke Campbell’s clash against Tommy Coyle for the WBC Lightweight title. He maintained his undefeated streak against heavy hitters like Marcelo Luiz Nascimento, Beka Lobjanidze and Irineu Beato Costa Junior of Brazil.
Following his win against Costa, Whyte’s clash Brian Minto for the WBC International Silver Heavyweight title was announced. On September 12, 2015, the American Brian Minto took on the undefeated brit on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s title clash with Gary Cornish at The O2 Arena. In the third round of the bout, Minto fell to the floor by a booming right hand from Whyte. Having knocked out Minto once, the decision was already in Whyte’s corner.
Whyte’s next fight would be against an old rival Anthony Joshua. On 14 September 2015, it was announced that the fighters would clash at the O2 arena in London on the 12th December for the then-vacant British Heavyweight Championship belt. The fight was broadcasted on Sky Sports Box Office as a pay-per-view event. This would prove to be the toughest fight of the brit’s career.
On the night of the bout, Joshua was able to use his power to hurt Whyte in the first two rounds. Although, Whyte landed a few counterpunches he was unable to slow him down. Whyte regained control in the third round. He was able to keep Joshua at bay with several body shots. In the seventh round, with Whyte still in control, Joshua was able to connect with a heavy right-hand causing Whyte to fall to the ropes. Anthony Joshua used this opportunity to land a follow-through and a fierce uppercut knocking Whyte out.
The loss against Joshua left Whyte devastated mentally and physically. As he had suffered a severe shoulder injury. Whyte spent the better part of a year away from the ring. He went through multiple surgeries over the months.
As Dillian Whyte was the type to be easily put down, he yet again made his second come back on 25 June 2016. Under the deal with Matchroom Sport Whyte faced Ivica Bacurin upon his return to the ring. Whyte started slow but quickly regained his comfort. By the third, they manage to get a victory via knock-out.
